Minimum Requirements

High school diploma and three years of specialized mechanical experience in the operation of large steam boilers, centrifugal chilled water units, cooling towers and related mechanical equipment.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must have some basic knowledge of plumbing, pipe fitting, electricity, and machinery.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Must be physically able to perform the duties as described. May be required to be on campus during and immediately following all emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, etc. This position is critical and requires the incumbent to be reliable, highly qualified, capable of performing independent duties under pressure, and possess supervisory ability. This position involves working on a rotating shift as the Central Energy Facility operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Activity

1. Operates and maintains all equipment at the Central Energy Plant, consisting of high pressure boilers, three centrifugal chilled water units (4000 total tons), two 1500 ton cooling towers, air compressors, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, various controls and regulating devices including two 480 volt distribution centers.

2. Serves as contact supervisor for maintenance and emergency calls received for Physical Plant during weekends and after normal business hours. Responsibilities include entering work orders or work requests for maintenance and emergency maintenance reported by students, faculty, staff and parents. Follows on-call protocol to relay information to the appropriate senior official, trades supervisor(s), trades specialist, and/or contractor so that repair personnel can be recalled to campus. Has the authority to recall trades personnel when necessary and is responsible for ensuring emergency corrective actions are taken. Maintains cellular phone contact with trades workers in the field to assist with problem resolution and to ensure safety. Keeps senior officials appraised of emergency maintenance status and progress made to resolve issues as appropriate. Maintains a record of all calls and action taken for follow-up on reported maintenance and emergency maintenance issues.

3. Responsible for taking water samples, performing tests and adding chemicals as necessary to maintain proper specification for boilers, chilled water system, and cooling towers. Responsible for checking and maintaining operating logs and records of all operating equipment.

4. Performs as Central Energy Plant shift supervisor after hours, keeping records, supervising fuel deliveries, inspecting contractor work in the facility after hours and ensuring compliance with regulatory and environmental requirements.

5. Monitors a computerized 24-hour campus wide Energy Management System to ensure economical use of heating and cooling resources and diagnose problems with heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Notifies and recalls appropriate personnel if necessary, to correct malfunctioning equipment.
