Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and previous work experience in a college or university setting, specifically with residential on-campus living experience as a professional staff member is required. Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Public Administration, Student Personnel, Counseling or Leadership is preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of and ability to apply student development theory to practical situations is essential. Previous experience supervising students and providing informational and educational training to student employees, and the ability to foster a positive living/learning environment is fundamental. Efficiency in communication and time management, as well as strong organization and public speaking skills is essential. Must be able to handle multiple tasks.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

High energy level, self-discipline and control, commitment to students, strong work ethic, flexibility, ability to work well under pressure and manage stress are critical. Occasional evening and weekend work is required. Some travel will be required. Rotating on-call schedule also required. Emergency Response: Serves as a referral source for residence hall directors during counseling and crisis issues, which requires on-campus living. Required to be on-call for emergency response on campus. Provides crisis intervention and emergency management.

1. Human Resource Management: Trains, supervises and evaluates live-in residence hall managers. Assists in the selection, training, supervision and evaluation of paraprofessional staff. Creates and implements appreciation and recognition tools for various staff levels.

2. Student Development: Provides leadership in creating and managing student involvement and community building. Provides leadership to staff and students to promote and ensure an atmosphere in the residential communities and on campus that is conducive to self-direction, academic achievement, social and cultural maturity and self-discipline; works to encourage civic, ethical and professional responsibility. Serves as departmental conduct officer for cases beyond minor violations as necessary. Provides assistance in the development of processes and systems which engage and involve students in providing feedback and perspective regarding department initiatives. Actively participates in creating and supporting programs, services and a living and learning environment that promotes citizenship. Builds collaborative relationships within the Department of Residence Life and Housing and the College of Charleston. Encourages student participation in programming efforts and in the governance of the residence hall.

3. Administration and Operations: Actively participates in the implementation of departmental strategic goals. Attends departmental training sessions and staff development opportunities throughout the year. Oversees residence hall managers in promoting an environment that is safe, well-maintained, supportive of academic endeavors and builds community. Oversees designated programs and special projects. Coordinates, maintains and monitors the administrative and operational functions associated with the management of designated residential areas. Coordinates the residence hall management team to ensure efficiency in the quality of living for residents. Oversees allocation of funds for programming.
