Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or GED and experience in the painting trade. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of and ability to use and maintain tools of the painting trade, such as, paint brushes, paint guns & sprayers, compressors, scaffolding, scrapers, power sanders, pressure washers, extension rollers, etc. Must have valid SC driver’s license. Must be able to effectively and professionally communicate information both orally and in written form. All employees at the College are expected to perform their jobs in a safe manner in accordance with best safety practices as prescribed by their department, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration training as provided by the Physical Plant at the College of Charleston.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Must be able to perform manual labor and work outside in inclement weather. Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding. Must be able to tolerate heights and perform painting duties on ladders, scaffolding, or lifts. Will be exposed to paint fumes and paint removing chemicals. Must be able to travel to on/off campus buildings, traverse stairs and construction sites, and lift or move packages, furniture and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. May be required to be on campus prior to and immediately following emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, etc. Some weekend and overtime work will be required to handle special events and peak workloads.

1. Primes, paints, varnishes and stains a variety of different surfaces to appropriately maintain & renovate the college campus inside and outside various buildings, dormitories, historic homes, office buildings, and large facilities. Uses appropriate care and skill to ensure that the historic nature of the facilities is protected and maintained. Responds to assigned work orders with a sense of urgency and ensures appropriate and timely resolution. Operates mobile electronic device to access, update, and complete work orders to include all appropriate information to reflect action taken, labor hours, parts, materials and other historical and cost related items.

2. Performs more complex techniques and methods utilized in the painting trade to achieve the desired finish on surfaces. Evaluates the specific needs of each job. Performs surface preparation & painting, staining, and varnishing duties, as required, to complete work orders in a timely manner. Uses paint removers or paint cutting chemicals to remove stains and old paint, as needed. Uses neutralizers to prepare woods for paint or stain. Ensures the application of stain or paint is appropriate to achieve desired result and match other furnishings if necessary. Practices and promotes proper safety procedures. Consistently wears/uses personal protective equipment as required by OSHA safety regulations to ensure protection from chemicals, paint, solvents, etc.

3. Assists and performs special tasks requiring a higher level of skill which will serve to improve the employee’s knowledge and abilities. Trains apprentices and new painters in appropriate procedures that pertain to the painting trade. Applies the correct primers and paints and mixes color as directed.

4. Prepares areas to be painted by washing, scraping, stripping, and sanding to achieve a smooth surface. Applies caulking and patching materials as required to achieve a smooth surface for the application of paint.

5. Responsible for ensuring that furniture, floors, walls, & surrounding work area is protected from dust & debris while work is being performed. Also responsible for ensuring that all jobsites are thoroughly cleaned up when work has been completed.
