Position Description

The Bachelor of Science program in Exercise Science, housed in the Department of Health & Human Performance (HEHP) at the College of Charleston, is one of the fastest growing and largest majors on the College’s urban campus, located in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The HEHP department invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position in Exercise Science beginning in August of 2018. The successful candidate will join the rapidly growing HEHP department, which offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Public Health, Exercise Science, and Physical Education.

Since its founding in 1770, the College of Charleston has maintained a strong liberal arts curriculum. The College is a state-supported, comprehensive institution and ranks among the nation’s top universities in providing quality education in the arts, sciences, education, and business. The student body numbers approximately 11,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The downtown campus is located within walking distance of world class shopping, restaurants and entertainment and is only a 20 minute drive to 3 public beaches. Academic Responsibilities: 1) Provide high-quality instruction in three courses per semester within the Exercise Science curriculum, 2) Participate in the development and advancement of curriculum, 3) Establish an independent, sustainable line of inquiry, 4) Utilize excellent written and oral communication skills, 5) Engage in service activities within the program, department, school and college as appropriate, 6) Work collaboratively within the program and department to help meet stated goals and objectives, and 7) Commit to a liberal arts & sciences undergraduate education.

Minimum Qualifications: 1) An earned doctorate in Exercise Science or closely-related discipline from an accredited institution and 2) The experience/training to teach courses such as Introduction to Exercise Science, Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Advanced Exercise Physiology and other classes within the Exercise Science major.

Preferred Qualifications: Higher education teaching experience in the subject areas listed above, academic advising experience, evidence of scholarly productivity, and prior activity in higher education service activities.

Salary: Salary and benefits package is competitive and dependent on qualifications and experience.
