Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and basic experience in the locksmith trade preferred but not required. Must be willing to learn how to install, perform (general, preventive and emergency) maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair building lock and door hardware systems in residential, industrial, and commercial applications. ALOA (Assoc. Locksmiths of America) trade certification is preferred. Must be able to complete records and paperwork associated with repairs/installations. Knowledge of campus layout and buildings is preferred. Must have a valid SC driver’s license as the employee will be required to drive state vehicles to transport equipment &/or personnel when needed. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must have the ability and desire to learn and acquire knowledge regarding building lock and door hardware systems. Should have considerable initiative and ability to gain knowledge of locksmith equipment, tools, materials, supplies, and work procedures, used in locksmith equipment maintenance and repair. Must have ability to learn to utilize key cutting equipment and other locksmith tools/machinery, as well as, to anticipate, locate and correct general and emergency locksmith problems. Must be able to acquire a working knowledge of high security keying systems such as Medeco Biaxial and Schlage Everest Primus.

Must have basic computer skills with ability to learn e-mail and maintenance work order systems. Must be able to follow complex oral and written instructions, as well as, comprehend blueprints and door hardware specifications. Must have ability to learn and use key cutting equipment and other tools, equipment, materials and supplies related to the locksmith trade. All employees of the College are expected to perform their jobs in a safe manner in accordance with best safety practices as prescribed by their department, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration training as provided by the Physical Plant at the College of Charleston.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Must be able to perform manual labor and work outside in all types of weather. Must be able to work in close quarters, climb ladders/stairs, enter/exit hatches and work on rooftops. Must be able to work in areas of excessive heat/cold and lift or move furniture, objects and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Overtime and call back work is required after normal working hours and on weekends, as needed. May be required to be on campus prior to and immediately following all emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, etc.

Activity

1. Assists locksmiths perform a variety of troubleshooting, maintenance and repair duties to eliminate faults and malfunctions in lock/locking systems throughout the college campus and in various college buildings, dormitories, historic homes, office buildings and large facilities. Responsible for assisting locksmiths with the repair and replacement of locks, door closers and various hardware for locking systems. Assists with troubleshooting, repairing, replacing, and installing locks/locking systems as appropriate. Assists with performing tasks required from work orders, building inspections and preventive maintenance. Assists locksmiths maintain safety/security and integrity of all facilities. Assists with maintaining lock and key security and uniformity, including implementation of system changes, making, controlling and issuing keys and repairing and/or replacing locks and door hardware as required. Communicates with supervisor and facilities staff to determine scope of contracted repair and/or maintenance work.

Responds to assigned work orders with a sense of urgency and ensures appropriate and timely resolution. Operates mobile electronic device to access, update, and complete work orders to include all appropriate information to reflect action taken, labor hours, parts, materials and other historical and cost related items. throughout the entire College. Assists locksmiths perform maintenance and initiate repairs as appropriate to eliminate defects.

2. Assists Locksmiths to establish and maintain uniformity in locking systems to ensure accessibility by appropriate personnel to all buildings on campus, while simultaneously ensuring the security of the buildings. Assists with maintaining an accurate database of key codes, key distribution and key policies/procedures, as well as, an accurate inventory of trade related tools and other equipment. Responsible for implementing and maintaining electronic and hardcopy records and procedures associated with the distribution and return of all keys. Assists locksmiths in issuing keys to authorized recipients, including staff, faculty, and students.

3. Assists Locksmiths cut and fit new keys for locks using original keys and bit lists. Assists with monitoring and controlling an accurate inventory of locksets, key blanks, door closers, and various hardware for locking systems. Assists Locksmiths troubleshoot malfunctions of various alarm systems, file cabinets, safes, and locking systems. Assists Locksmith with acting as key contact in emergency situations.

4. Drives State vehicles when transporting supplies & equipment. Demonstrates safety knowledge by practicing and adhering to all proper safety procedures and OSHA regulations pertaining to the electrical trade. Responsible for ensuring that furniture, floors, walls, and surrounding work area is protected from dust and debris while work is being performed. Ensures all jobsites are thoroughly cleaned up when work has been completed.
